Milborne May Fayre

The event commenced on Friday evening with a disco and karaoke competition for under 16’s.

Judging by the energy they put into their dancing, the youngsters thoroughly enjoyed their evening!

Next day, the Fayre was officially opened by County Councillor Della Jones MBE,, ably assisted by Blandford town crier Jean Wells.

There was something of interest for everyone, from boot-sale to barbecue and crockery smashing to cream teas, entertainment was provided by the Milborne First School country dance team.

The highlight of the afternoon was the dog show, with over 40 very well behaved dogs panting for the prizes.

A dance in the village hall rounded off the day with the line-dance club giving a demonstration followed by everybody joining in, all to music supplied by our very able local group “Epicentre”.

Our aim had been to provide a day of fun, bringing all the village together and I hope this is what we achieved.

My thanks go out to everyone who helped, give yourselves a well deserved pat on the back.

May Fayre Dog Show

From pups to senior canines, Jack Russels to Dalmatians, they came in droves from Milborne and around to the Dog Show at the Milborne May Fayre.

David Harding, of Damory Veterinary Clinic, had the unenviable task as judge of picking the three best dogs in each of the five classes. Teddy, owned by Jacqui Davies, was placed first in the Most Handsome Dog class as well as walking off with the Best In Show trophy. Competition was hot in the Prettiest Girl class, with 21 entrants and was won by Bramble, a very pretty black and tan Cocker Spaniel, owned by Avril Hirst. As well as rosettes for the top three places, these two won £5 gift vouchers. A dozen young dogs made up the Best Puppy class, which was eventually won by Daisy, owned by Simon Bratby. Daisy won a fleecy VetBed for herself!

But Mr Harding had his work cut out with the Waggiest Tail class – 23 dogs vying for a large bag of Wagg dog food! Unable to split them, the judge asked for the five most active tails to remain for a ‘wag-off’. Maisie, owned by Peter Dunkley out-wagged them all – a popular choice from all who have met the young Cocker on walkies in Milborne!

Again there were difficult decisions to be made in the Best Walk to Heel class, with Milborne’s canines proving that they are obedient on-lead.

After a short-list of five was asked to perform again, Ruby, and Chris Nowell won a £5 voucher with an elegant walk (that’s Ruby, not you, Chris).

Caroline and I were overwhelmed with the response for the dog show and thank all 42 dogs and owners. Thanks also to sponsors Wagg Foods, and Allinghams Pet Shop and Damory Vets of Blandford for kind donation of prizes and Sid Coe for commentary. We hope to make it an annual event with different classes and other attractions next year.

Open Gardens a great success.

The sun shone and the flowers bloomed as hundreds of visitors strolled around the village viewing the 25 gardens on display.  Old gardens, new gardens, gardens with work in progress were opened up to the visitors by proud owners who shared the secrets of their success.

The event was organised by the Horticultural Society and St. Andrew's Church and raised more than £900 for Weldmar Hospicecare Trust and St. Andrew’s Church.
